In these latter days, the Lord has not left us without direction. We have the words of the prophet and the scriptures from ancient times. We have also been blessed with the unique collection of revelations called the Doctrine and Covenants.
In September 1835, the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants was completed. The Doctrine and Covenants was the first book of its kind; a collection of modern revelations given directly from God in response to several specific inquiries from his servants. This is the first book of scripture that did not have to be translated from ancient scripture, it was written down as it was received.
The Prophet Joseph Smith said that the Doctrine and Covenants is “the foundation of the Church in these last days, and a benefit to the world, showing that the keys of the mysteries of the kingdom of our Savior are again entrusted to man” (see the section heading for D&C 70).
