Many years ago, the action and faith of a single young man went on to shape the lives of millions. Joseph Smith Jr. was just a boy when he knelt to pray to God and received a heavenly vision of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ.
Three years later, on a crisp September night, 17-year old Joseph received another heavenly visitation. The ancient prophet Moroni appeared to Joseph five times that night, informing him of a set of ancient golden plates that were hidden away. Moroni also gave Joseph instruction regarding the restoration of Christ’s church on the earth.
Four years later, on September 22, 1827, Moroni again visited Joseph. On the Hill Cumorah near Joseph’s home in upstate New York, Moroni gave Joseph the golden plates, which contained the record of God’s people in ancient times. Joseph also received the Urim and Thummim, tools which would aid him in the translation of the ancient record. Joseph’s translation of this sacred text was published as the Book of Mormon in 1830, and since that time, millions of copies have been published, read and studied, changing the lives of all those who believe the message it contains.
